Teaching success for maths training scheme
Teaching skills across the board could be furthered if a model used to train maths teachers is followed, it has been reported.
A one-year course designed to prepare school staff for teaching maths A-level has proved successful, with 80 per cent of participants going on to teach the subject to older pupils.
The programme, which is worth one-third of a master's degree, could be used as an example for the government's plans to make teaching a master's level profession, the Times Educational Supplement reports.
Run by Mathematics in Education and Industry (MEI), school staff participating in the scheme attend one of four universities in their spare time, as well as being supported online.
They will then earn a postgraduate certificate in mathematics pedagogy.
The highest number of people in a decade opted to take maths at A-level this year, a spokeswoman for the Department for Children, Schools and Families told the Press Association yesterday.
