Schools participate in sponsored silence
Teachers across the country have been helping pupils keep the peace while raising money for a good cause. Pupils held their tongues to raise money for the Macmillan Cancer Support's Big Hush campaign recently, which was of special significant to a school in York. Dringhouses Primary School managed to raise more than £2,000 for the scheme while motivated by the plight of Conor Brockbank. Eight-year-old Conor successfully underwent chemotherapy for leukaemia before the sponsored silence. Sara Storey, a teacher at the school, told the York Press how the event helped the pupils and the teachers reflect on the effect of cancer on their own lives. "The fact it is called the Big Hush is somewhat ironic really, as it provides schools with the opportunity to talk about the children's own experiences of knowing people who are living with cancer," she said.
