Grayling: 'Frank Gallagher parenting' on the increase
The type of parenting that is found on TV shows such as Shameless is becoming more prevalent in the UK, according to a Conservative politician.
In comments which may interest those involved in teaching, Chris Grayling, the shadow work and pensions secretary, warned against the increase of "Frank Gallagher-style parenting".
Speaking to the Reform think tank, Mr Grayling said: "In too many parts of our society, responsible parenting and good parenting experience is disappearing.
"I think the loss of parenting skills is too important an issue to avoid."
He went to call for improvements in parenting skills in general and pointed out that future parent develop their skills from their own parents.
In addition to general parenting skills, Mr Grayling urged parents to become more involved in their children's education, by encouraging learning at an early stage and providing books and other educational materials.
However, Clare Tickell, chief executive of NCH, told the BBC that Mr Grayling's use of the Shameless analogy showed a negative attitude, especially to single and vulnerable parents.
