"Charismatic" teacher wins praise from actress

Renowned drama teacher Sylvia Young was a notable influence in actress Letitia Dean's life.

Speaking to the Times Educational Supplement, she recalled the significant role Mrs Young played in her school life.

Ms Dean highlighted the huge respect pupils had for their teacher, noting: "If someone is investing their time and their energy in you as Sylvia did, you want to do well for them."

The former Eastenders actress is currently playing the role of a teacher in the stage production of High School Musical and told the paper that she is basing her part on Mrs Young.

She added that as a teacher she was "firm but fair" as well as "warm and nurturing".

"She's charismatic, a strong, formidable character who ruled the roost," stated the actress.

Originally a film, High School Musical documents the exploits of teenagers Gabriella and Trey, who defy convention to appear in their school musical.
