Thinktank calls for more training for teachers of younger pupils
A thinktank has suggested that those teaching younger pupils should gain an extra qualification, while further training should also be provided for teacher assistants.
A Kindergarten Postgraduate Certificate in Education would equip teachers of three to seven-year-olds with important skills with which to bring their education in line with the rest of Europe, argues the Institute for Public Policy Research.
Furthermore, the wellbeing of primary school pupils should be supported by a "network of counsellors", according to Thursday's Child, a forthcoming report from the organisation.
Research fellow at ippr and the lead author of the report Sonia Sodha said: "We need long-term reform that better gears our school system around the needs of children and young people."
She added: "Children's well-being is fundamental to their learning."
Earlier this month, Conor Ryan, a former government adviser, told the BBC that the availability of more information and accountability means that assessment can now be carried out more effectively by teachers.
