New proposals for teaching Welsh dyslexic pupils
Teaching dyslexic pupils in Wales could be given a boost amid new recommendations by politicians.
Proposals published by the National Assembly for Wales enterprise and learning committee suggest a number of changes to the educational system to ensure that children with this learning difficulty are not let down.
One of the suggestions is to train teachers so that they are better equipped to deal with dyslexic pupils.
This would include a mandatory provision to ensure that trainee teachers have learnt how to support students with reading and writing difficulties.
In a bid to make this easier, the committee recommends that children who show signs of a learning difficulty should be screened for the condition at an early age.
And the report also calls for a specialist teacher to be placed in every school, who has a qualification to work with dyslexic pupils.
There is currently an under-allocation of funds for pupils with special educational needs in the UK, recent figures suggested.
