Scottish school recruits first male teacher for 34 years
Male teachers looking for a job may well feel special in Scotland, where in 2007 they only made up 24 per cent of registered teachers.
What's more, at Gartcosh Primary School, the first male recruit since 1974 has entered the staffroom, to work alongside 13 female teachers, the Evening Times reports.
The North Lanarkshire school has welcomed Donald Macdonald, who referred to discussions about reversing the trend for women to dominate the classroom.
He told the paper: "When I was doing my postgraduate training at Jordanhill they were writing a paper on ways to try to attract men into the profession."
While 2007 saw 36,436 teachers in Scotland's primary schools, only 2,598 males took up the same position.
This amounted to just 24 per cent, down from 30 per cent in 1994.
The Scotsman recently reported that male Scottish teacher Ewen Hardie highlighted the Burmese political situation by walking barefoot from Edinburgh to London.
