Select Education focuses on Makaton training

Specialist training day organised for local teachers

The Croydon branch of Select Education, the leading educational specialist, is organising a Special Educational Needs (SEN) training day focused on the successful 'Makaton' technique for local teachers on 21 March 2006 at Alexander Infants School, Croydon.

Makaton is a speech teaching approach, which encourages children and adults to use signs from British Sign Language as a method of communication, before gradually replacing each sign with words in order to eventually obtain standard speech skills. The technique, which is recognised internationally and used in more than 40 countries worldwide, also uses symbols, which when combined with signs and speech has been proven to be an effective means of developing literacy skills.

Commenting on the event, Samantha Davis, Manager of Select Education's Croydon branch, says: 'We have had a very positive response to our Makaton training, so much so that we are considering running another course in the near future. I feel that this event will be a valuable experience for our candidates and will give them the additional skills to achieve success in SEN schools across the Croydon area.'
