Independent school pupils increase

The number of pupils attending private schools have increased, which may be of note to those seeking a teaching vacancy.

Figures from the Independent Schools Council (ISC) reveal that attendance at independent schools has increased on 2007 by 0.8 per cent.

This brings the total number of pupils at the 1,300 schools to 511,677 and is the highest rate of growth seen since 2003.

Boarding at school saw an increase of 0.4 per cent, with 13.1 per cent of pupils now being boarders and the remaining 86.9 per cent attending through the day.

Chris Parry, ISC chief executive, said: "Despite the current economic climate, increasing numbers of parents are choosing to make sacrifices to invest in high quality education and schooling."

Also revealed in the findings is that the 92.9 per cent of A-level pupils from independent schools went onto higher education.

The ISC represents the UK's independent schools, which educate a wide social range of pupils, with almost one-third receiving assistance with their fees.
