NUT calls for review into pay
There are calls for a further review into teachers' pay after the rate of inflation was set at 3.8 per cent, which may be of interest to those considering a teaching job.
Christine Blower, acting general secretary of the National Union of Teachers (NUT), has asked the School Teachers' Review Body (STRB) to appeal to education secretary Ed Balls.
The 15th report of the STRB states that teachers can appeal for a review of average rate of inflation goes above 3.25 per cent.
March's figures mean that the average level of inflation for the past 12 months has been 4.1 per cent.
Noting the impact that inflation can have on the living standards of teachers, Ms Blower said: "Three years of below-inflation pay awards for teachers are having a serious and adverse effect on recruitment and retention to the profession."
"It is essential to halt this continued downward spiral."
Member s of the NUT have planned to hold a one-day strike of its members on April 24th to protest against the government's proposal of a pay increase which is below the level of inflation.
