Select Education's piglet teaches life lessons at Teignmouth College
To support Teignmouth Community College's new horticultural course, the college has teamed up with local education recruitment specialist, Select Education in Plymouth. Select Education has contributed to the course's farmyard with the addition of a piglet, who joins the course as part of an initiative to help students with special educational needs to learn important lessons about farming, life-cycles, sustainability and food chains.
The project has proved to be a big hit with the students and will contribute to the completion of their BTEC in Horticulture, which the college hopes will be the first of many new courses including hairdressing and motor mechanics. The piglet, who is yet to be named, has already been busy raising money for Children In Need through Select Education's competition to name him.
Holly Findlay, a consultant with Select Education comments, 'The farm site is truly amazing! On our visit we fed the pigs, explored the farmyard and gave the students an introduction to sustainability. It's a great way for the students to learn about the environment - it's so practical and hands-on that it's hard for the children not to have fun while they're learning!'
