Q: Which colleges do you cover?
A: Select Education FE cover the whole of the UK and will approach any
college on your behalf to find you suitable work, whether it is on part time or
full time, temporary or permanent basis.
Q : Once I have sent my application to Select
Education, how will I know whether there are any assignments for me?
A: Once an application has been received and all the key information is
available and correct it is scanned and processed. Once this is complete you
will be flagged as available on the live database. A college will indicate its
requirements for an assignment setting a specification for the experience,
qualifications and level of work required. This request is then matched against
the live database. If the specification matches your own details and
availability we will contact you by telephone and discuss the assignment with
you.
Q : Are candidates expected to provide their own
teaching materials and equipment or will the college provide this?
A: The associates will probably use both. It is very unlikely that a
college would restrict access to materials. In the case of personal safety
equipment hard hats and boots for example, it would be advisable to find out by
asking the college before the assignment begins. The college induction would be
a good time to find out.
Q : If I accept an assignment what happens then?
A: Your details will be passed to the college. They may contact you
before your assignment starts and give you details of your induction. Select
Education will give you a contact name at the college. Any questions regarding
college procedures should be raised at this time. All Select Education
candidates can be required by college to attend induction programmes and team
meetings prior to the start or during assignments. A typical induction will
include a discussion on College Policies, e.g. Health & Safety, Data
Protection, Quality Assurance, Administrative Procedures, e.g. registers etc.,
syllabus content, examinations etc. A typical team meeting would include review
of curriculum, student progress and general college business etc. Duration and
frequency of meetings will vary from college to college, teaching level to
teaching level and from activity band to activity band.
Q: How do I find out about teacher training courses
which are running?
A: Most colleges deliver one or more of the many teaching qualifications
available, however you must choose a qualification that is recognised by the
Further Education National Training Organisation, FENTO. You can check which
courses are endorsed by logging onto their website
www.fento.org. Here you will find a list of the colleges and
qualifications.
NB: FENTO will shortly become known as Lifelong Learning UK
www.lluk.org
Q: What can I expect to earn per hour if I work
through Select Education FE on a temporary basis?
A: Each college will have its own hourly pay rate for the work they need
covering, if it is on a temporary basis. We adopt that hourly pay rate and will
pay you directly into your bank account the week after you have worked - we
then charge the college accordingly.
NB: Select Education FE does have arrangements with some colleges to pay
monthly. Where this occurs you will be notified prior to accepting an
assignment
Q: Do I have to have a CRB check?
A: All lecturers working in Post 16 education through Select Education
FE require an up to date Enhanced Disclosure from the CRB (Criminal Records
Bureaux) This currently (March 2005) costs £34 and covers you for 3 years. This
covers you for any work in the FE sector whether organised through Select
Education or not.
Q: Do you offer evening and weekend work?
A: Select Education FE offers work in colleges to include both evening
and weekend work. Colleges call upon us for lecturers to cover classes purely
at these times as well as part of a normal daily/weekly timetable.
Q: I am a qualified assessor would you be able to
find me some work?
A: If you hold the Assessor awards D32/33 or A & V awards then
Select Education FE would be interested in hearing from you, so please contact
us on the above numbers for work in your area.
Q. I am an FE Lecturer but I would like to work in
secondary schools, is this possible?

which works closely with all UK colleges.
