Select Education in Partnership with the National Association of Gifted Children
(NAGC)
35,000 gifted or talented children are born each year.
Without the right support these children’s gifts will die and they will never
maximise their potential
With the right emotional, social and intellectual support these children could
become the brain surgeons, inventors, sports people or musicians and composers
of tomorrow.
NAGC is in partnership with Select Education to ensure as much as possible that
gifted children throughout England and Wales are recognised and supported.
A gifted child:
- Has a wide vocabulary and talked early
- Asks lots of questions and learns more quickly than others
- Have a retentive memory
- Is extremely curious and can concentrate for long periods on subjects of
interest
- Has a wide general knowledge and interest in the world and is sensitive to world
issues
- Enjoys problem-solving
- Has an unusual and vivid imagination
- Could read from an early age
- Shows strong feelings and opinions
- Has a quirky sense of humour
- Sets high standards and is a perfectionist
- Loses interest when asked to do more of the same
No one will show all of these characteristics, but highly able children will fit
a significant number of them. Some children also have a learning difficulty such
as dyslexia, autistic spectrum disorder or ADHD.
NAGC and Select Education will launch a joint initiative – IT’S
ALRIGHT TO BE BRIGHT – a programme of event nationwide and some local, where
children can:
- Explore their gifts and talents
- Understand what it feels like to be gifted
- Learn new skills
- Make new friends
- Have fun
- Join with us to say YES – it IS alright to be bright
